Tikal Park Lodge
is ideally situated within the Tikal National Park and offers
the closest accommodations to the temples and pyramids.
Within the park,
there are 2 museums, visitors´ centre, post office, handicraft
shops, local eating places, campground, the Park Administration
HQ, and the main parking lot.
A short walk
will take you to the very heart of Tikal - The Central Plaza. Access
to the Tikal ruins is by foot only, all cars must remain at the
Tikal village, unless there are elderly or handicapped people requiring
assistance.
Of the park's
222 square miles only 10 square miles of central Tikal has been
mapped and over 3,000 separate buildings have been revealed: temples,
shrines, ceremonial platforms, residences, ball courts, terraces,
causeways and plazas.
One of the best
vantage points to watch the sun go down is from the top of Temple
II.
A flashlight
is extremely useful as darkness falls early in tropical jungles.
The Visitor's
Center is well worth a visit to see the amazing Map Relief of Tikal.
The guards often relax here in the evening and play the marimbas
- listen out for the music - you are welcome to join them. Carry
on past the Center and you will find the quaint little post office
- most people miss this unusual gem!
